Young people helped into employment

news story image Young people from Liverpool are now a step closer to their dream careers.

A group of 30 youngsters have been placed in apprenticeships within their chosen fields, which include everything from joinery and roofing to canine beauty therapy.

And it is thanks to Greater Merseyside Connexions that these young people are able to fulfil their ambitions.

Employers are also reaping benefits by being supported with advice from Connexions on legislation and changes in education, training and the national minimum wage.

Kieran Gordon, Chief Executive at Greater Merseyside Connexions, said: “We recognise the fact that everyone involved needs our help, from young people who have never written a CV to employers who want to know the legal requirements of employing a young person.”

Many of the apprentices, who are all aged between 16-19 years old, were not in education, employment or training (NEET) before their involvement with Connexions.

Kieran added: “These are youngsters who are most in need of help, so the support and advice we provide can prove life changing in some circumstances.”

One young person who is already feeling the benefit of an apprenticeship is Bernard Sweeney, 17, from Dovecot. After leaving Cardinal Heenan High School in 2009, he struggled to find work.

Bernard, who had a keen interest in the construction trade, was contacted Greater Merseyside Connexions Activity Agreement Pilot, who put him in touch with JC Construction, a local building maintenance company, where he completed a three week joinery work placement.

His employers at JC Construction were so impressed with his commitment that they offered Bernard a joinery apprenticeship, enabling him to gain nationally recognised qualifications while also getting valuable hands-on experience.

Paul Heggarty, Director at JC Construction, said: “Bernard is the benchmark for our apprentices. He is punctual, reliable and always willing to learn.

“His ability and attitude doesn’t go unnoticed by the rest of my workforce and my experienced joiners always ask if he can help them on their jobs.”

Connexions is the impartial information, advice and guidance service that offers young people support in everything from planning their education or career, to personal finances, health and relationships.
