Liverpool Vision's Strategic Implementation Framework identifies the importance of mixed use development in the Commercial District to its overall regeneration. The last few years have seen a dramatic growth in the number of residential units in the area, including the X Building, Albany Building and Beetham Tower. By the end of 2006 there were an estimated 550 apartments either occupied or for sale, with a population of around 800.
This is expected to rise further over the next few years with some 1,115 units approved by the Liverpool City Council Planning Committee, including Beetham’s West Tower, Rumford’s Unity development, English Cities Fund’s St Paul’s Square & Pall Mall and Green Apple’s redevelopment of the former Hamilton House also on Pall Mall. It is estimated that this could see the residential population in the area reach over 2,000 by 2011.
